What Are You Reading?: Christian Coen

The Good Portion: Scripture – The Doctrine of Scripture for Every Woman by Keri Folmar

The Good Portion is a series of books written specifically for women who desire to know God more through Christian theology. The book entitled Scripture brings the woman’s focus to God’s Word and acknowledges our relationship to Him through reading it.

What has been your favorite thing about the book?

My favorite thing about this theology book is how it asks questions that we as believers may wonder and profoundly answers them with God’s Word, biblical hermeneutics, and intriguing examples. Folmar encourages the believer to not only think about God’s Word but apply it and trust what it says. She gives clear examples of God’s faithfulness to preserve and combine Scripture into what we now have as the Bible.

How has this book challenged you?

I have been challenged through Folmar’s writings by her straight forward approach to Scripture. The truth represented in this book is based on the Word of God, and those longing to learn about its history and stability will gain this knowledge. The author’s theological exposition has shown me how I need to be bolder in the truth of God’s Word by speaking the truth in love to those who go astray and encouraging those who walk in the faith. This book has made me look into my own life and ministry and remember the importance of the everyday gospel that is changing and shaping our lives.

Would you recommend this to your friends?

I would absolutely recommend this book to my friends and fellow women in church leadership. This book takes the theology of Scripture and not only demonstrates God’s truth but makes it relatable to us as females. I would also recommend this book to new believers or those who are looking into the Christian faith. The first two chapters encourage us on if we can know God and how we can grow in Him. This is vital in our knowledge of God and growth as a believer.

My name is Christian Coen. I graduated from The College at Southeastern in May 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies and English. Soon after I married my husband William (who is also a SEBTS alumnus), had two little boys, William Carl and Jackson, and am now serving alongside my husband, who is the pastor of Skypointe Church in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. I am a homeschooling SAHM (Stay at Home Mom) who loves to cook, paint, travel, and serve the local church. I was born and raised in Durham, NC, but as we say in South Carolina "nothing could be finer" than living here.
